Velamir

Kingdom of Verin

Verintown

Velamir waited for the others by the stream. The sun peeked into view, casting its first rays onto the water. He heard clomping hooves behind him. Lissa and Jax approached with their horses. Velamir edged closer to the water, gripping Vandal’s reins. Vandal shied away, as if sensing what was coming.

“Easy boy,” he whispered.

Velamir gave Jax the go-ahead, and he took the vial from his pocket, pouring it over the stream. The liquid spread across a portion of the water, and it sprung into the air, crackling as it froze over.

“Would you do the honors?” Jax asked.

Velamir stepped forward, unsheathing his sword. He drove it into the portal, piercing through the frozen water. A burst of shock coursed over the blade, all the way to his fingertips. Velamir flew backward, landing in the grass with a thump.

“Vel!”

Velamir sat up gingerly, spotting his sword a few inches from his hand.

“What in Tariqi was that?” Jax exclaimed.

Velamir stood, snagging his sword from the ground. “I don’t know, maybe the vial was faulty.”

Lissa mounted her horse and called to them, “It looks big enough to ride through. I’m going in.”

Her horse reared, and without a backward glance, she galloped forward, jumping into the portal. Velamir’s jaw slackened when he saw how wide the void was. At least twice as large as the opening Bear had made the first time they used the Zamanin Sulari.

“We don’t know how much time we have until it closes. We should go,” Jax suggested, mounting his horse.

Velamir slapped Dauntess’s rump, and she trotted through without further prodding. He mounted Vandal and urged him in after Jax. Velamir was flying, the air rushing at him, whipping Vandal’s mane into his face. Velamir’s stomach turned, but somehow, it wasn’t as terrifying as the first time had been. In fact, it was sort of fun. Vandal shot out of the portal, hooves kicking up the grass. Velamir regrouped with the others and glanced at his surroundings. They were on a high hill. He rode to the edge, spotting the castle in the distance. It was a formidable-looking place with its high towers and walls. A large town encircled it. It was highly unlikely that an army could penetrate the castle walls. It was possible, but it would mean many casualties. That was what made Velamir’s mission so important. They had to finish the battle before it could start. What were a few lives in place of hundreds?

Velamir’s skin itched under his fine clothes. They had changed into their disguises early that morning. Jax rode up beside him, his True Manos hood pulled over his head, covering his blond hair and casting his pale skin in shadow. Jax’s eyes traveled down, landing on Velamir’s hand, where a large ring fit around his forefinger. The cavalier symbol caught in the sunlight, and Velamir’s hand flexed, uncomfortable with the new weight and the burden it reminded him of.

“I found it in Winston’s pack,” Velamir told Jax. “I might need to show it to the guards.
